An exploration into the world of Library Music
The concert series Echoes of Brussels jumps back and forth along the capital’s timeline, focusing on memorable creations and residents. René Costy is an obscure figure. A classically trained violinist, he experimented with Moog synthesizers and composed instrumental tracks that were played all over the world. In the 1970s, the Belgian musician recorded a library of musical ideas–literally library music–that others could purchase and sample. Music on demand, then, long before the streaming era. Sdban previously released a compilation of his work, and now Bozar, together with Werkplaats Walter, is shining the spotlight on him once again. Pianist Camille-Alban Spreng (ODIL, Mobilhome) delves into Costy’s catalogue with a superlative quintet, using the funkiest riffs and beats as the starting point for a new creation. Sdban will release a recording of this concert at Bozar!
