PROGRAMME
Franz Liszt, Via Crucis -Artur Zagajewski, Annelies Van Parys, etc. 4 New compositions
Liszt’s musical impression of the 14 stations of the cross grabs you by the throat. Not only because Liszt takes his listeners to the boundaries of tonality, but also in particular because the score is so heartrendingly plain. “Durch Mitleid wissend” Liszt jotted down at the end of the tenth part, referring to the famous words in Wagner’s Parsifal. Sincere music can only arise from compassion, and only from compassion can wisdom arise. Liszt used these words to summarise with great accuracy the turmoil which his Via Crucis carries within it. Liszt’s quiet stations of the cross comes alive in this concert from the fervent piano fingers of Jan Michiels. In addition, Klarafestival asked four young composers from as many countries – including our own Annelies Van Parys – to create new contributions for cello quartet using as a starting point the hymn Vexilla regis uit de Via crucis.
