The talented young jazz musician David Virelles presents his highly acclaimed 2014 album Mbókò. Its subtitle, Sacred Music for Piano, Two Basses, Drum Set and Biankoméko Abakuá, tells you something about his intentions. Virelles drew inspiration from his Cuban roots, borrowing many ideas from the ritual and sacred music of Abakuá culture. One key element was the biankoméko, a traditional Caribbean drum. Virelles also called on the services of two bassists – a highly unusual move in jazz circles and usually a recipe for chaos. The move came off and the result is a wonderful interpretation of complex Cuban rhythms.
