When King Edward II installs his despised, exiled lover on the throne next to him and makes him the most powerful man in the kingdom, he unleashes a bloody and ruthless power struggle within the court and his own family that will ultimately lead to his own brutal downfall.
The complete title actually reads: ‘THE FIERCELY CONTESTED CROWN AND PITIABLE DEATH OF KING EDWARD AND HIS FAVOURITE, SQUIRE GAVESTON, WHOSE ENCHANTMENT CAUSED HIM TO TURN AWAY FROM HIS QUEEN AND CROWN PRINCE, TO THE INCREASING ANGER OF THE GATHERED COURT AND THE OTHERWISE IGNORANT COMMON FOLK’ (FREELY BASED ON CHRISTOPHER MARLOWE).
Once again, Tom Lanoye gets stuck into a classic piece of theatrical literature. This time he revises Edward II, by Christopher Marlowe, Shakespeare's rival. The very first royal drama in history is performed by an impressive cast.
Seven years on from the successful production of MACBETH, Zuidpool collaborates once more with Mauro Pawlowski. He has composed a sonic backdrop for this royal family drama full of vengefulness and pitch-black humour.
"The Zuidpool/Tom Lanoye/Mauro Pawlowski combination is worth its weight in gold: Edward II is a gripping play that stands out as a jewel of theatrical writing, and whose incisive script thrills from start to finish,” said De Morgen.
