FORUM Berlinale
In the presence of Ruth Beckermann (director).
In Die papierene Brücke, Ruth Beckermann takes a look at the Jewish past and present. In the form of an essay, the director sets off in search of information on the history of her family. Her quest takes her from Vienna to Eastern Europe, by way of Israel, before returning to Vienna. In 1986, Austria found out about the Nazi past of the ÖVP politician and presidential candidate, Kurt Waldheim. These revelations led to violent public debates on antisemitism in Austria. By telling the tale of her own family, Beckermann also narrated the history of the Jews of Central Europe and the history of the Bukovina, a region that was extremely influenced by its Jewish population before the national-socialist crimes.
