This documentary covers the traveling exhibition Facing the Future. Art in Europe 1945-1968 as presented at the ZKM | Zentrum für Kunst und Medien Karlsruhe after passing by BOZAR last summer and before going to the Pushkin Museum in Moscow. Peter Weibel, director of ZKM and co-curator of the exhibition, guides you through the exhibition and explores the development of art in both in Eastern and Western Europe after the war. Today, we know that the dominant model of art history for this period is a product of the Cold War: the socialist realism of the communist East opposing abstract expressionism symbolizing the free West. For this reason, the exhibition attempts to reinterpret the development of art in Europe from a pan-European perspective. We (re)discover a European cultural space where many new art forms, as media art and conceptual art, were created simultaneously on both sides of the Iron Curtain.
The exhibition presented in this documentary is part of ‘Trauma & Revival’, a European project on cultural relations between Eastern and Western Europe, co-funded by the Creative Europe Programme of the EU.
