‘A FEVERISH ERA IN JAPANESE ART’

Expressionism in the 1950’s and 1960’s

In the turbulent years after the Second World War, Japan attracted a large number of influential artists. One of them was the French art critic Michel Tapié who introduced ‘Art Informel’ to Japan. Inspired by the bright colours and energetic brushstrokes, Japanese artists experimented with material, form, texture and movement, loosely rooted in the age-old artistic tradition. Conversely, the revolutionary works and performances by the Japanese had a major influence on the Western art scene of the ’60s and ’70s. BOZAR portrays a part of this intense exchange between East and West in A Feverish Era in Japanese Art. Expressionism in the 1950’s and 1960’s. This exhibition is part of the cultural program to celebrate the 150 years of diplomatic friendship between Japan and Belgium.

Curators: Mr. Ryuichi Matsubara, Mr. Shoichi Hirai and Ms. Jitsuko Ogura

Artist and performer Sadaharu Horio interacts with the audience in his internationally acclaimed performance which takes place on 14, 15 and 16 October, the opening weekend of the exhibition.
