At the age of 12 my family and I move from Congo to Belgium. Now, for the first time, I am confronted with my mixed race. In Africa I am considered white. In Belgium I am considered black. Totally confused I fight against an identity crisis that lasts for 20 years. In order to find my identity I shatter a taboo by speaking about this racial issue with my family and other mulattoes.
Roland Gunst is a Belgian Congolese visual artist and director regularly working on subjects like identity and imaging in the relation between black Africa and white Europe. Videos, installations and performances are the expression of his vision on the matter.

20:00 & 22:00 The Last Song Before the War - Kiley Kraskouskas
Presented by BOZAR
(2013, 74’, USA, OV st FR + EN)
A feature-length documentary that captures the inspiring rise and uncertain future of Mali’s annual Festival in the Desert. The history of the festival is told from the perspective of the co-founder and festival director, Manny Ansar, the musicians who perform and the intrepid travellers from around the world who make the long journey to attend the festival. Against the backdrop of stunning musical performances, the film subtly reveals the trials and triumphs of creating an artistic event in such challenging economic and political circumstances. After 12 years of success and unforgettable musical moments, the Festival in the Desert came to a halt in 2012 when separatist rebels and Islamic militants seized control of Northern Mali. The Last Song Before the War chronicles the 2011 Festival -arguably the last edition to embody its original goals - a global display of peace, reconciliation and the healing power of music.
