“I thought it was real,” Jonas Kaufmann recalls his first opera he ever saw aged seven, Puccini’s Madama Butterfly. “I was destroyed when the singer performing Madama Butterfly came out for the curtain calls and she wasn’t dead anymore.”
Since almost two decades ago, indisputably the finest tenor of his generation, Jonas Kaufmann has been breathing life into a wide range of opera repertoire heroes. The freedom and breadth of his repertoire is astonishing - his uniquely versatile voice delights in the lighter tenor roles of Verdi and Puccini, as much as in the big dramatic singing demanded by Wagner. In his recital in Brussels, Kaufmann celebrates the grand musical masterpieces that made 19th-century Paris the world capital of opera. His selection of arias and duets spans this magnificent era and proofs his mastery in French repertoire.
An internationally celebrated French mezzo soprano, Clémentine Margaine, will join Kaufmann in this unique concert with the Belgian National Orchestra.
