After an old college friend offers him a job at an iron foundry, the honest and upright Ishwar leaves a slum on the outskirts of Calcutta, where he lives with a group of refugees from East Bengal. Ishwar wants to build a stable life for himself, his sister Sita and Abhiram, an orphan boy he has taken in. Those around him see things differently and accuse him of betraying and abandoning his people.
Ritwik Ghatak (1925-1976), often overshadowed by Satyajit Ray, was the brilliant, unpredictable rebel of Indian art cinema. Where Ray's films were polished and refined, Ghatak's were raw, personal and politically charged, shaped by Marxism and the trauma of India's partition. Despite limited success, financial problems and addictions, he created a highly original body of work and influenced an entire generation of filmmakers.
