"He 's been watching us for two weeks! Holy Fathers and Saints, preserve me! In the last two weeks the sergeant's wife has been flogged! No provisions given to the prisoners! And the streets are full of rubbish and beggars! Shameful - scandalous!"

The Governor of a distant provincial town in tsarist Russia is horrified when informed of the arrival of a Government Inspector. In reality, however, the strict "inspector" is none other than a young civil servant, who is penniless and… famished!

The Heads of the local authorities, one more corrupt than the other, are unaware of the true identity of the unexpected visitor and, terrified by the idea that he will carry out an in-depth scrutiny, compete among themselves to curry favour with him by means of flattery and bribes.

This misunderstanding creates exciting comic situations in this playful satire on the avarice and stupidity of senior bureaucrats, as well on social corruption in general, whatever the country or historical period. The "Government Inspector" is a comic farce that is considered by many critics to be one of the most important pieces of Russian literature and a leading social satire in the world of drama.
