Feminine Proposals

All the artists, from the aesthetic and ethical commitment to their vocation, have been stretching boundaries, along with many other actors, so that women in Cuba today are freer and feel more rewarded. And all have assumed the act of creation in their full human dimension, endorsing the contradictions, reflections and dynamics of the Cuban society in particular and of overall circumstances in general.

Some of them do so with more poetic, intimate, spiritual and existential gestures and others from philosophical, political, social and historical approaches. All ceased to be inspiring muses to become protagonists of the creative act.

All the generations from the 1980's to the present in Cuba have been filled with young women artists, and many of those who exhibit their works in this exhibition, without putting aside their feminine intuition or perhaps going deeper and being more organic about it, are not only the best among their female peers, but also among male artists. I remember another master of abstract expressionism, Antonio Vidal, when he said to me: "Ñica -referring to artist Antonia Eiriz- was the best male artist of us all" and he clarified "I say the best male artist, following a macho mentality and not the best female artist". In other words, she was not good as a woman, she was immense as an artist. I think that justifies sending these feminine hints from today's Cuba.
