We mainly remember Beethoven’s symphonic works for piano or his chamber music; but what of his lieder? If Schubert was the number one specialist in the matter, the man behind the genre would seem to be Beethoven – among others. Moreover, at times delicate, at times surprisingly expressive, these pieces are of a rarely evoked wealth; all the more reason for Matthias Goerne to concentrate on the composer’s operatic output on the occasion of the Beethoven year. To accompany him in this adventure: the young and exceptionally gifted pianist Jan Lisiecki.
