The Russian violinist Nikita Boriso-Glebsky is a regular prize-winner who has, amongst others, the David Oistrakh, Fritz Kreisler and Jean Sibelius Competitions and a string of podium places to his name. He performs solo in the Fourth violin concerto by Henri Vieuxtemps, a composer he knows well seeing as they worked together on the recording of his complete violin concertos (Fuga Libera). The alternately meditative and tempestuous work continues to win over audiences. Schubert’s Fifth, written when he was barely 19, is the most mature symphony from his early period. Its clear structure and relaxed character are reminiscent of Haydn and Mozart. We begin the concert with a lively Divertimento by the latter.
