‘New Year's Concert’

The National Orchestra’s New Year concert is an excellent opportunity, in the very quiet period that follows the festivities, to place a number of popular works on the programme. Two soloists take pride of place in a concerto for their instrument and orchestra. Mozart’s First Horn Concerto and Hummel’s Trumpet Concerto were both written by virtousos at the time but have stood the test of time and gone on to become a firm fixture on the repertoire. The immortal music of Grieg’s Peer Gynt is also an obvious choice for such a programme, as is the much loved melody of Mascagni’s Cavalleria rusticana. Overtures by Mendelssohn and Rossini then follow and the performance ends with the obligatory waltz by Johann Strauss jr.
