The Spanish director Andrés Duque has filmed a fascinating portrait of the Russian musician Oleg Nikolayevich Karavaychuk (1927-2016). He was a gifted child, after playing the piano for Stalin and attending the Leningrad Conservatory, he devoted the majority of his time to music for the theatre and cinema – notably collaborating with Sergueï Paradjanov and Kira Mouratova, two filmmakers who had long been subjected to censorship. In Russia, Oleg Nikolayevich Karavaychuk was admired for his music and technique, but also for his eccentric personality. This film is a real gift for the spectator – the gift of an old artist looking to reconcile himself with the world and who with the help of words, gestures and piano notes, free of social conventions, transports us to a world where discord has a liberating beauty.
