‘PREMIERE: ECHO - Rúnar Rúnarsson’

The Icelandic director Rúnar Rúnarsson put himself on the international map with award-winning dramas such as Sparrows and Volcano. His newest print Echo is a Christmas film. But then a Christmas film like you've never seen before, with a series of unconventional and rather uncatholic situations that all take place around Christmas. An abandoned farm is going up in flames, there is an open coffin in a church, chicken carcasses parade through a slaughterhouse, a children's choir sings Christmas songs around a towering Christmas tree, a wailing dog doesn't know what to do with all that fireworks.
Rúnarsson places all these joyful, banal and sometimes downright grim scenes side by side in 56 separate scenes populated by non-professional actors. An artistic, bold and extraordinarily beautiful mosaic film that combines humor, sorrow and beauty in a corrosive and tender portrait of modern Iceland.
