Belgian National Orchestra

‘Rachmaninoff Festival’

12 Feb.'21
- 20:00

Over two epic concerts, the Belgian National Orchestra performs the complete works for piano and orchestra by Sergey Rachmaninov. The Russian composer wrote his First Piano Concerto at the age of 18. Devastated by the disastrous reception of his First Symphony, he sank into depression before demonstrating his resilience through his moving Second Piano Concerto. His highly virtuoso Third Piano Concerto served as his calling card on tour in the United States, where he eventually settled following the 1917 Russian Revolution. Only six works were created during this exile, including a poorly received Fourth Piano Concerto and the Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini, which can be considered a single-movement piano concerto. BOZAR will echo with the sounds of these works performed by two internationally renowned pianists: the Uzbek Behzod Abduraimov, winner of the London International Piano Competition in 2009, and the Russian Denis Kozhukhin, First Prize Winner in the 2010 Queen Elisabeth Competition.
