Beethoven's “Ghost Trio” is one of the cornerstones of the piano trio genre in which he creates a haunting atmosphere through various effects. Bold, spooky and simply brilliant. Cécile Chaminade's Piano Trio No 2 is not (yet) established repertoire, but deserves as much praise as it received at its premiere in 1887. The French composer was encouraged by Saint-Saëns, Chabrier and Bizet to pursue her career when her father rejected her a life as a musician. Her trio is therefore bathed in French and Romantic tradition. Shostakovich wrote his Piano Trio No 2 in 1943 in memory of a close friend, but equally against the backdrop of wartime horror. Personal and national tragedy collide in it. The acclaimed Sitkovetsky Trio, three graduates of the Yehudi Menuhin School, plays the healing notes.
