Debussy, Lekeu & Ysaÿe
The concert series Echoes of Brussels hops back and forth along the capital’s timeline, highlighting memorable creations and residents. It is only natural, then, that we should encounter Eugène Ysaÿe on the capital’s cobbled streets. When not touring internationally, the Belgian violinist, composer and conductor taught at the Royal Conservatoire and organized concert series. Thanks to his vast network and prestige, he introduced the latest music to Brussels at the turn of the century, including Debussy’s String Quartet. The latter’s Berceuse héroïque [Heroic Lullaby] features on the programme here, a work dedicated to Albert I and his troops in 1914. Violinist Sylvia Huang and pianist Jan Michiels delve deeper into the interplay between Brussels and Paris with all the energy of a high-speed train.
