Souffle Collectif’s ʿUbūr عُبُور is a unique encounter between Zâr and Gnawa, two trance practices rooted in ritual, music and collective memory. The Egyptian group Mazaher, which is one of the few remaining ensembles keeping the Zâr tradition alive, will share the stage with Moroccan Gnawa musicians, including multi-instrumentalist Mehdi Chaïb and one of the rare female guembri players, Hind Ennaira. Together, they seek a common language based on the modal and rhythmic affinities between the two traditions. Contemporary interventions by composer Nancy Mounir, a key figure in Cairo’s alternative music scene, fuse everything together in an intense and hypnotic performance.
