Open-air screening

Young Wadjda dreams of owning a green bicycle. But she’ll have to forget about racing a boy from the neighborhood: the law prohibits girls from riding bikes. After hearing about the prize money for a school contest in Koran recitation, Wadjda decides to earn the cash to fulfill her dream herself.

Haifaa al-Mansour studied comparative literature at the American University in Cairo and completed her formation with a Master’s degree in Film Studies in Sydney. She began her film directing career with three shorts, Who?, Bereavement of the Fledgling, and The Only Way Out, followed by her award winning documentary Women Without Shadows. The success of her films around the world inspired a new movement of independent filmmaking in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. She is famous for penetrating the wall of silence surrounding the lives of Saudi women and providing a platform for their unheard voices. Wadjda is her first feature film which earned her a worldwide recognition. In 2019, she directed The Perfect Candidate which will be soon released in Belgian cinemas.
