​​​​​​​In 2017, the LGBTQI community, human rights defenders and allies all over the world were shocked by the devastating news of crimes being committed in the Russian republic of Chechnya. David France’s Welcome to Chechnya is the first documentary about those saving lives – both their own and those of others. The film follows LGBTQI activists as they work undercover to rescue victims and provide them with safe houses and visa assistance to escape persecution.

The screening will be followed by a discussion between David France and Marion Wasserbauer

David France is an Oscar-nominated filmmaker, New York Times best-selling author, and award-winning investigative journalist. His much-anticipated new documentary, Welcome to Chechnya, premiered last January at Sundance 2020. His directorial debut How to Survive a Plague (2012) documents the beginning of HIV epidemic and activist work undertaken by Act Up and received a great critical acclaim, including a nomination for an Oscar. 

​​​​​​​Marion Wasserbauer is a post-doc researcher and guest lecturer at the department of communication studies at the University of Antwerp. In june 2018, she obtained her PhD in the Social Sciences with her research Queer Voices: Exploring the Roles of Music in LGBTQ Lives. Her current research project focuses on LGBTQ persons with a migration background in Flanders and Brussels.
