In the presence of the director

Bozar invites Roberto Minervini for a Close-up. Born in 1970 in Italy, this filmmaker, screenwriter, and producer of music and film is now based in New York. His work, situated midway between fiction and documentary, stands out as one of the most striking expressions of contemporary world cinema. He holds a Master’s degree in Media Studies (Journalism) from The New School University in New York and a PhD in Film History from the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid.

Minervini observes and films his subjects, situated in the shadow of the American Dream. Construction workers, minimum-wage employees, former inmates, drug addicts, sex workers, and teenagers making their name in the rodeo—all are captured by the director’s attentive and intimate camera, producing cinema that is profoundly human and of remarkable beauty. His films have been recognised at the world’s most prestigious festivals: The Other Side and Les Damnés were presented at Cannes, while the “Texas Trilogy” has garnered multiple international awards.
