Belgian National Orchestra

‘Musica Maestro’

12 Jan.'24

Freedom and oppression

Conductor David Ramael introduces the orchestra's various instrument groups in this concert. Familiar and less familiar orchestral works illustrate the uniqueness of each instrument and its timbre within the orchestra. Projections on large screen zoom in on what is happening on stage. Music is selected according to the theme of "freedom and oppression.
Artists in general and composers in particular have always played an important role in society's pursuit of freedom and self-development. Beethoven, the composer of such works as the famous Ninth Symphony and also of the opera Fidelio (in which a woman dresses up as a man to free her wrongfully convicted fiancé, Florestan) is a good example. Then again, a composer like Shostakovich experienced very closely what it was like to have to live and work in a dictatorship.
With the elections coming up, in this Musica Maestro, conductor David Ramael highlights the music of composers who in different eras fought for the democratic freedoms we take so much for granted.
