Participation and social action through music
Organized by SIMM (Social Impact of Music Making) every year since 2015, this international research platform is bringing together experts from the fields of musical practice and research once again. The 10th SIMM-posium will take place at Bozar, this time in a close collaboration with the Chair Jonet / CESAMM of the University of Ghent. It will feature presentations, thematic panels and a keynote, exploring the social impact of participatory music-making across a wide range of cultural contexts and countries. Delegates are warmly encouraged to join in person in Brussels, even though online presentations will also be accommodated where necessary, and the event will be live-streamed.
Monday 24 November, the symposium opens with a keynote by Prof. Dr. Lee Higgins, director of the International Centre for Community Music, York St John University, on the future of participatory music practices. The first session will highlight the role of music within asylum centres and prisons and addresses the complex realities of working with music in these spaces.
A panel, led by Beatriz Ilari, will explore the dual role of ensemble education as a place for empowerment and as a structure prone to hierarchy and exclusion, illustrated with case studies from Brazil, Afghanistan, and the US.
