Music, identity, and resilience
Every year since 2015, the international research platform SIMM (Social Impact of Music Making) has brought together experts from the fields of musical practice and research. The 10th SIMM-posium will again be hosted at Bozar, this time in a close collaboration with the academic Chair Jonet of the University of Ghent. Delegates are warmly encouraged to join in person in Brussels, even though online presentations will also be accommodated where necessary, and the event will be live-streamed.
Tuesday 25 November will commence with a session on music practices that provide cultural continuity and resistance to displaced and marginalised communities. After that, the focus will be on the healing and connecting role of music in education, care, and residential settings, by means of international examples.
A panel will discuss how music mediation can support artistic citizenship, curriculum reform, and new ethical-pedagogical approaches in higher music education. Finally, participatory music practices that contribute to citizenship and social cohesion are discussed, including projects on homelessness and community building in South African townships.
