Facilitation, criticism, and innovation
Every year since 2015, the international research platform SIMM (Social Impact of Music Making) has brought together experts from the fields of musical practice and research. The 10th SIMM-posium will again be hosted at Bozar, this time in a close collaboration with the academic Chair Jonet of the University of Ghent. Delegates are warmly encouraged to join in person in Brussels, even though online presentations will also be accommodated where necessary, and the event will be live-streamed.
On Wednesday 26 November, the morning sessions will focus on the skills needed by socially engaged musicians, focusing on improvisation, intergenerational creativity, and the roles of the artist/educator. Afterwards, the field will be critically questioned by SIMM co-founders Brydie Bartleet, Geoff Baker, and Lukas Pairon, who will discuss the conceptual foundations of social music practices. The day will be brought to a close by means of sessions highlighting the interaction between participatory music projects and formal institutions, while offering a critical look at the pedagogical and political potential of socially engaged research on participatory music practices.
