Bozar invites multidisciplinary artist Sammy Baloji and Marie Umuhoza, co-artistic director of Africa is/in the Future, to engage in a discussion inspired by the exhibition When We See Us, exploring the themes of Triumph and Emancipation in relation to their artistic practices. Central to this chapter is the pride in one's history and achievements—despite enduring adversity and centuries of oppression.
With your ticket for the Sofa Session, you can explore the When We See Us exhibition at your own pace between 18:30 and 19:30.
How have artists from Africa and its vast diaspora depicted daily life over the past century? Koyo Kouoh, Executive Director and Chief Curator of Zeitz MOCAA in Cape Town, and her team have sought to answer this question through a landmark exhibition. Bozar proudly presents this expansive kaleidoscope of Black figurative painting from the 1920s to the present day.
Join Sammy Baloji and Marie Umuhoza for a conversation on the significance of triumph and emancipation in their work. They will reflect on individuals, historical events, and figures who embody success and recognition, alongside the collective journey of communities in their ongoing pursuit of freedom and empowerment—both in the arts and beyond.
Through his film and artistic practice, Sammy Baloji critiques the relationships between science, capitalism, and colonialism, illustrating how these dynamics impede the Congo region's potential for renewal while highlighting the lasting impacts and ecological destruction. Marie Umuhoza, as a multidisciplinary creative producer, explores the intersectionality of her personal experiences and those that emerge from the creation and sharing of culture.
