J.S. Bach Goldberg Variationen

“Caine phrases and attacks the music in a fascinating way. He loves the musical past - Mahler and Bach, alongside Thelonious Monk and Miles Davis - but never sounds anything less than a restlessly modern performer. “ (The Guardian, 2001)

The pianist Uri Caine is the ultimate jazz-classical crossover artist, feeling equally at ease in both genres. He will perform his own personal version of Bach’s Goldberg Variations during the Bach Heritage Festival.

Musicians rarely cross the musical boundaries of jazz and classical music. Musicians who mix both genres are even rarer. And musicians who are successful at blending the two are almost impossible to find. But Uri Caine is the exception to the rule. The American pianist feels equally comfortable performing with the Concerto Köln baroque ensemble as with the jazz trumpetist Paolo Fresu. Why? Because Caine is so familiar with the vernacular of both jazz and classical music that his interpretation feels completely natural in either genre. The quality of his intelligent jazzy arrangements of classical music is simply unmatched. Previously Caine has already shared his unique take on the work of such greats as Beethoven, Verdi and Mahler. On the occasion the 250th anniversary of Bach’s death in 2000, he agreed to take on the Goldberg Variations. He will perform his own personal arrangement of this seminal work again for the Bach Heritage Festival at BOZAR.
