Film director Alex Winter pays tribute to the extraordinary artist Frank Zappa by making a documentary from never-before-seen archive material. Filmed over the course of six years, Winter had unlimited access to 'the vault' containing all sorts of images and videos about the musician: the entire archive was digitized thanks to a successful crowdfunding campaign that brought together more than 10,000 of the musician's fans. All this material, together with interviews with Zappa’s family and musical collaborators, brought Zappa to life.

Alex Winter is a director, writer and actor who has worked across film, television and theater. He entered show business as a child actor. As a filmmaker, Winter’s narrative features include Freaked (1993) and Fever (1999) which screened in the Directors’ Fortnight in Cannes. Winter is the founder of Trouper Productions, which services his documentary work. Between 2019 and 2020, Winter released three documentary feature films: Panama Papers, Showbiz Kids, and Zappa. His most recent work, The Youtube Effect (2022), had its world premiere at Tribeca Film Festival.

After the documentary, a panel discussion will take place on the theme "Who was Frank Zappa?". Co de Kloet, Pamela Des Barres, Ben Watson and Robert Martin will take part in the conversation, moderated by Zjakki Willems.
