Between Castle and Palace

Valérie Fritz and Goran Stevanovich perform music in an unusual location: a small room opening onto the courtyard of Brussels’ reception centre for political refugees, the Petit Château. Between an electric scooter and a sink, and with little more than two rugs, a cello, and an accordion, a special concert takes shape.

Bozar, Orfeo and Fedasil have been organising concerts at the Petit Château for several years. These are performed by young international artists from the ECHO Rising Stars programme. The audience is diverse and relaxed. Children sit enthusiastically in the front row, fidgeting and sometimes listening attentively, sometimes not. Adults come and go at will. Whether you drop in briefly or stay for the entire concert, it’s all good.

“The music unfolded like the story of my life — at times serene, at times stormy.”
Fartoush, a Petit Château resident

The atmosphere evolves with the music: from the serenity of Schumann to Goran Stevanovich’s own compositions and repertoire. “The music unfolded like the story of my life — at times serene, at times stormy,” says a woman in the audience.

“People respond so spontaneously, they react instantly to each moment in the piece. It’s enlightening to see.”

Another listener, himself a singer, described it as a rare moment: “Very few places give you this kind of feeling.” A resident photographer said afterwards that it offered him an unexpected breathing space.

“I’m reminded once again why I do this: connecting a roomful of people matters far more than playing every note perfectly.”
– Valerie Fritz, ECHO Rising Star, cellist

Halfway through, someone accidentally leans against the switch and the lights go out. People laugh briefly; there is some murmuring, but the musicians simply continue playing. The post-concert gathering is informal and relaxed. Residents and musicians linger, swapping stories and sharing a laugh. The next day, a group of Petit Château residents visit Bozar for a Concert Croissant with the same artists. Two Brussels worlds converge: The Petit Château and the Centre for Fine Arts — two places shaped by very different realities.

Five times a year, Bozar organises performances at the Petit Château as part of the ECHO (European Concert Hall Organisation) programme, which supports emerging artists and brings new energy to the international stage through concerts and special projects, while reaching diverse audiences and fostering social advancement.
