This Was 2024

2024 will go down in Bozarian history as a year filled with love and meaningful encounters. Here’s a look back at some of the many highlights of the past year, captured in 24 images (and just a little bit of text).

The Spanish artist Antoni Tàpies welcomed over 43,000 visitors to his exhibition, which closed its doors early in 2024.

Actor Stefaan Degand made his childhood dream come true by conducting the Belgian National Orchestra in Brahms' Fourth Symphony. 

A newly discovered work by Ysayë, found in Bozar’s archives, premiered during the Belgian Music Days alongside compositions by two other Belgian composers.

Your monthly nighttime rendezvous with Bozar, the lively Bozar All Over The P(a)lace, shook the very foundations of the Palace. The Afropolitan-themed nocturne was an unforgettable celebration.

At the Klarafestival, Rufus Wainwright presented a condensed version of his opera Hadrian and a stunning selection from his career as a songwriter.

30 April was an evening dedicated to literature, poetry, and film, featuring the iconic writer Eileen Myles

The exhibition Histoire de ne pas rire: Surrealism in Belgium closed with an impressive 118,841 visitors. Perhaps you remember the giraffes at Brussels Central Station? A playful nod to the campaign image inspired by René Magritte.

Thai filmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul packed the Henry Le Boeuf Hall for an in-depth discussion about his work. It was the perfect launch for the Opening Week of the 2024-2025 season! 

Writers and friends Édouard Louis, Didier Eribon, and Geoffroy de Lagasnerie championed the power of friendship during that same Opening Week, speaking to a sold-out audience. Autumn saw the opening of an exhibition dedicated to Hans/Jean Arp and Sophie Taeuber-Arp, two central figures of 20th-century abstract art. Don’t miss it—it’s on until 19 January. 

Robbrecht and Daem architecten kicked off the new format Staging the Concert with an architectural installation in the Henry Le Boeuf Hall. Their innovative design created a fresh concert experience, blending space, light, and materials with the music of Béla Bartók

Early October marked the debut of the brand-new cinema, The 23. With just 75 seats, this intimate space offers the perfect setting to lose yourself in the magic of film. 

Performances made a powerful comeback at Bozar in 2024, taking centre stage in the Horta Hall. One standout was a mesmerizing performance by Boris Charmatz.

With a Grammy Award in hand and roses on stage, Arooj Aftab enchanted an audience of over 2,000 at Bozar.

As part of an extensive focus on Caroline Shaw, the vocal ensemble Roomful of Teeth performed her celebrated Partita for Eight Voices, an exploration of diverse vocal techniques.

What better way to end the year than with love, one of this season’s key themes? On 6 December 6, 2024, two members of the Bozar Young Circle, Emily Defreyne and Guillaume van Doorslaer, celebrated their civil wedding at the Centre for Fine Arts, a place close to their hearts. Surrounded by close family and friends, they enjoyed an inspiring guided tour of the Love is Louder exhibition, wrapping up their special day in style.
