‘Cubalandz invites Africa is/in the future’

18 May'18
- 22:30

Pam Talk | Guiss Guiss Bou Bess

BOZAR will be a partner of Africa is/in The Future festival; an annual multidisciplinary event that focuses on artistic practices exploring the future of the African continent.

19:00 PAM Talk* | Traditional and Urban Music: an Enduring Love Story @Rotonde Bertouille

In Africa and the Caribbean, DJs are bearers of a vast traditional heritage, particularly when it comes to percussion; they not only sample rhythms but also celebrate them. DJs showcase their adaptability by joining forces with masterful traditional musicians of their generation to make records and perform on stage.
This is the real strength of the Franco-Senegalese duo Guiss Guiss Bou Bess, and the Cuban DJ Jigüe who will be our guests for a pre-concert chat - the perfect opportunity to understand their approach and to question the relationship between traditions and musical (post-) modernity. When it comes down to it, hasn’t African and Caribbean urban music always been steeped in tradition, and aren’t the traditions themselves constantly evolving?

With Mara Seck (artist), Stephane Costantini (Doctor in Communication) and DJ Jigüe. Conference moderated by Vladimir Cagnolari, editor in chief of Pan-African-Music.com

22:3Concert: Guiss Guiss Bou Bess

Guiss Guiss Bou Bess, literally "new vision", brings together of two worlds and two artists: Mara Seck and Stéphane Costantini. Through their musical creations they seek to build new bridges between contemporary electronic music and African music, in particular by incorporating Sabar rhythms (traditional percussion-based Senegalese rhythms) and Mbalax (Senegalese pop music). In the process, the artists hope to spread Mbalax beyond its home country so that the Senegalese scene can export its rhythms, culture and identity through this rich and unique co-creation.
