‘Lecture by Minsuk Cho’

The architectural firm Mass Studies was founded in 2003 by Minsuk Cho in Seoul, South-Korea. It conducts a critical investigation into architecture in the context of mass production, intensely over-populated urban conditions and emerging subcultures that play a part in determining contemporary society.

In the context of diverse claims on public space in the twenty-first century, Mass Studies accepts the complexity between conservative versus future-oriented, local versus global, utopia versus reality, and individual versus collective, rather than striving for a singular, unified perspective.

Minsuk Cho has been committed to architecture through socio-cultural and urban research, as well as built works, which have been recognized globally. Furthermore, he co-curated the 2011 Gwangju Design Biennale and the Korean Pavilion for the 14th International Architecture Exhibition of the Biennale di Venezia, which was awarded the Gold Lion for Best National Participation. In late 2014, PLATEAU Samsung Museum of Art, Seoul, held their first ever architecture exhibition, entitled Before/After: Mass Studies Does Architecture. Cho is an active lecturer and speaker at symposiums worldwide.
