International Women's Day

On the occasion of International Women’s Day 2020, the United Nations, the European Commission, the United Kingdom Embassy to Belgium and the BOZAR are partnering to screen the documentary “Maiden”, the story of Tracy Edwards, a 24-year-old cook on charter boats, who became the skipper of the first ever all-female crew to enter the Whitbread Round the World Race in 1989. Despite strong opposition, Tracy broke through the chauvinistic yachting world and proved that women are very much the equal of men. She realised her dream and her rights as a woman.

The theme of this year’s International Women’s Day is "I am Generation Equality: Realizing Women’s Rights”, in line with UN Women’s new multigenerational campaign, Generation Equality. It marks the 25th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action that set out how to remove the systemic barriers that hold women back from equal participation in all areas of life - a visionary agenda for the empowerment of women and girls still to date.

This first Belgian screening of Maiden will be attended by Tracy Edwards herself, and will be followed by a panel discussion on women’s rights and gender equality in the world today.
