Vox Luminis of Belgium, which is celebrated for its sublime interpretations of early music, leaves its comfort zone to focus on the music of English composer Benjamin Britten. This 20th-century composer is one of the most important musical personalities in the history of English music. His a capella works were inspired by the aesthetics of Renaissance polyphony, a repertoire in which Vox Luminis is entirely at home. At the Aldeburgh Festival, founded by Benjamin Britten in 1948, the organisers were so overwhelmed by the vocal qualities of Vox Luminis that they asked them to record the entirety of Britten’s choral works. Tonight you hear the Belgian premiere of several of the vocal gems created by this unsurpassed English composer.
