In 2022, we will celebrate César Franck's 200th birthday. The Liège native was one of the most important composers of the 19th century. He particularly excelled in chamber music, with his Violin Sonata and Piano Quintet as the most important examples. Franck influenced a whole host of composers, including Chausson and d'Indy, but even Debussy was not unmoved by Franck's idiosyncratic musical language. In its jubilee year, Bozar highlights his chamber music and the large-scale Symphony in d. But the rarely performed Les Béatitudes, a grand oratorio for eight soloists and large choir inspired by Christ's Sermon on the Mount, which Franck himself regarded as his magnum opus, is especially not to be missed.
