Avi Avital is ready to shake things up
Avi Avital is undisputably one of the greatest mandolin players of our time. This season the charismatic Israeli Grammy winner will visit BOZAR three times, which gives him the opportunity to present a panoramic overview of his art. The visual legacy of American artist Keith Haring mirrors the zeitgeist of a decade and that of a continent. His cartoon-like characters, vivid colours and barking dogs became world famous, but there is more than meets the eye. Hector Berlioz: a musical trailblazer
With the intense preparations for the 250th anniversary in 2020 of the birth of Ludwig van Beethoven, we might be forgiven for forgetting that 2019 is the year of another significant musical commemoration. For it is also the 150th anniversary of the death of Hector Berlioz, another giant of nineteenth-century music. This French composer is every bit the equal of Beethoven in terms of orchestral effects and forms. BOZAR pays tribute to Berlioz with his Messe Solenelle on 6 November.

When Art Deco meets Nordic design

From the 10th till the 20th of October, Victor Horta’s flagship of Art Deco will trade its usual flags for those of the Nordic Countries. The Nordic Festival will bring music, cinema, dance… and much more to the Centre for Fine Arts. Jazz. Henri Matisse translated it into collage, Julio Cortázar into literature, and Yves Zurstrassen? Into painting! BOZAR’s “Free” exhibition features the work of this Belgian abstract painter from 26 September to 12 January. This season BOZAR puts a spotlight on the exciting musician Romina Lischka who will take you on a thrilling trip, from London to India’s Uttar Pradesh. With her favourite instrument in hand, the viola da gamba player broadens our horizons by introducing you to dhrupad, a traditional music genre that was popular in the 16th century Moghul empire. During her three concerts, the artist sends us on a journey through time and space, revealing the unimaginable range of the viola da gamba repertoire.

Jef Neve takes on a new challenge
Jef Neve has shared stages with artists as varied as Natalia, Gabriel Rios and Teus Nobel. He’s also made a name for himself as a composer: he has written two piano concertos and has worked on film scores including Felix van Groeningen’s The Misfortunates and the Oscar-winning box office hit The Artist. However, BOZAR has presented Jef Neve with a new challenge: to write a brand-new piece of work for organ and his Jef Neve Ensemble!
