Beauty at Bozar

Ideals Are Boring

In spring 2026, Bozar places beauty and ugliness centre stage. With the exhibitions ‘Bellezza e Bruttezza’ and ‘Picture Perfect’ as its key focal points, we explore how this inseparable duo constantly throws one another off balance. A journey through time, from the Renaissance to today.

Beauty and ugliness have been having a conversation with each other for centuries. In the Renaissance, the ugly made the beautiful shine, as can be seen in Bellezza e Bruttezza. Contrasts also play an important role in music, for example in the raw sounds of the ensemble Graindelavoix or with the London vocal ensemble Fieri Consort, which explores the beauty ideals of the Renaissance from a female perspective.

Today, the beauty industry sets unrealistic ideals, but artists respond to this. In Picture Perfect, Ana Mendieta, Cindy Sherman, Pipilotti Rist and Zanele Muholi demand a view of their own terms through photo and film. Art is a way to see and be seen.

Draw your own journey through the concepts of beauty and ugliness within the various programs at Bozar: Exhibition, Bozar all over the P(a)lace, Talks & Debates, Cinema, Digital, Performances, Bozar Sunday.
